Functionality and Style: A Guide to Your New Garage Door

Mar 21, 2022

There are many aspects of your home that you'll need to update over time; few people can live in the same house without updates or additions for the long term. One of the aspects of your home that you might not be thinking of updating at present, however, is your garage door. But there are many benefits to updating your garage door. Ultimately, you can not only make your home more comfortable and functional with these types of updates — but you can also potentially add value to your home on a larger level.

Additionally, a garage door can be more than just an entry to your garage. According to a Chamberlain Study Group, about 55% of all homeowners rely on the garage door as their home's main entryway. With that in mind, let's look into some of the things you should consider when adding a new garage door to your home.

1. Consider the Style Carefully

You need to consider the style of your new garage door very carefully — not just in terms of functionality, but appearance as well. Your garage door should be cohesive, and consistent with the exterior of your home. For example, if you have a home that features a lot of woodwork, you'll likely want to consider a garage door with a similar exterior. A more minimalist home should have a minimalist garage door in turn. The last thing you want is for your garage door to look as if it doesn't fit in with the rest of your home.

2. Make Sure It's Insulated

As previously mentioned, your garage door could end up being your home's primary entryway. With that being said, you need to make sure that your garage door is properly insulated. Insulation will not only ensure that your home itself is insulated as it should be, but it will also ensure that your garage itself is kept from freezing.

3. Prepare for Storms

Garage doors can be quite vulnerable to damage from storms, especially when high winds are involved. Look into what your municipality requires regarding garage doors, and take that seriously. Get a heavy-duty garage door that can withstand storm damage. This will hopefully prevent you from spending on repairs down the road.

Don't dismiss the importance of a good garage door. It can be crucial!
